I have had Hellena for about four years now, she has been through alot of moves, we came to where wee live now about a year ago and I started letting her outside for the first time in her life. She loves it. We have a morning routine to where she goes out and sniffs around (she never goes to far) but seemed to like playing with the gophers in the yard. I was told to not let her out but couldnt help it....one night a year ago, I had the notion to come home early because she had some puffyness in her actual eye ball, it became cloudy, we took her in to the vet and got atropine drops..........the vet failed to remember to offer a cone collar on her and she ended up scratching it out...came home to her eyes ruptured and hanging out....of course it was Sunday and took her to emergency....1500$$$$$$ dollars later we had her eye removed.....the previous owner told me that it was a related bunny disease that she must have picked up from gophers....and that it is related to her throat because every time she swallows it seems like something is stuck in her throat.....the lady is a friend of mine and seems to have a tendency to stretch reality....I had a couple different opinions......I was told that she has an inner tumor and it has spread to the other eye it seems. She bumps into the walls and such and seems like she is blind in the good eye...she has goood days and bad days....lately she ahs been hideing in my bedroom faceing the wall and constantly purring( I have heard that they do that to heal themselves......... she also has been haveing some shakeing....I am not sure if it is arthritis or what or if she is in pain of some sort? it is so hard to predict what she is experiencing and i FEEL HELPESS BECAUSE LACK OF MONEY...i REALLY CANT SPEND ALOT MORE MONEY ON HER....I almost became evicted because I spent my rent money on her opperation.....what I am getting down to is that I have sort of given up on what it could be.....the vets just shrugged theire shoulders, and quiet frankly, I dont really trust them....i know that there has to be some kind of answer. I would like to come across a holistic vet of some kind or Persian speacialist.......someone who knows the breed that can take a look at her in Santa Cruz Calif. seems that this city would be crawling with people that are knowledgable to this sort of thing or that can just give me an honest answer.....I have heard of suppliments or herbs that I can give her to slow down the growth of the tumor and so fourth...I dont want to give her something that will hurt her worse.......she also had difficulties with dermatitis.....she is the sweetest kitty in the world....it is such a shame for her to be sick and sad all the time....it effects me...or is she taking on my hardship????????????????? i dont know, i am clueless.....dont know what to do.....wassant aware of how sensitive Persians are....I feel ike it is my fault for letting her outside but I dont beleive in keeping them indoors....it isant natural....
please help.....

Re: 12 yr old persian with mystery brain tumor? in need of holistic expertise....
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 7:20 AMI'm sorry this is happening to your cat. It's stories like this that make me happy that my cats are indoors only and safe from contracting illness from wildlife and getting injured. Cats just aren't natural in the U.S. so it's so much safer and healthier for them (and the native wildlife) to be indoors.

Re: 12 yr old persian with mystery brain tumor? in need of holistic expertise....
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 2:36 PMI'm sorry to hear your little one is having so much trouble. Don't feel bad about letting her out; you don't even know if that caused the problem.
Sometimes the best thing to do for a sick, older animal is to euthanize them. It is sad but may be the best idea for the both of you. Veterinary medicine just isn't as far advanced as human medicine. Please don't let the little one suffer. -

Re: 12 yr old persian with mystery brain tumor? in need of holistic expertise....
Sat, June 14, 2008 - 4:12 PMVets think of a 12-year-old cat as old, but of course, she doesn't seem old to you (or to me either). But I think it's a fact that a lot of purebred cats have certain physical problems in the breed, and tend to not live as long as a cross, not as hardy. The things that you're describing that are happening to her actually make sense as being what the vets are saying, a tumor that is spreading and causing more effects as it does. For me, it has been really the hardest experience in my life to realize that even though I may have tried every resource I could I'm not going to be able to save my cat, and this has happened 7 times now. Love is the very best thing you can do for her, and you don't need to pay anyone to do this--in fact you are the only one who can. Love and appreciate her and do your best to keep your mind clear of worry when you're with her. It's time to start celebrating her being and her life when you're with her. Cats are very easily embarrassed by any loss of function or dignity, in particular if they feel their loved human finding the problem distressing. This will make them more distressed.
Feeling appreciation of her and gratitude for her being in your life and the time you have had with her will help both of you, and when the time comes to put her to sleep (which IMO is when they stop eating), feeling that same appreciation and gratitude will help you carry on. Let her outside, let her do whatever she wants. There are diseases that can be contracted from wildlife by cats, but they don't cause tumors. If she starts having seizures, the time is near. This is an awfully hard process, my dear; they just don't live long enough, ever. I would really suggest that you not financially jeopardize yourself to try to save her. Just love and appreciate and encourage her, and yourself. And as soon as you can after she has gone, get another cat. They need people like you so very much.
