Spooky, my two year old black Meezer mix has developed the odd new habit of crying at the catnip mouse as she beats up on it. She plays quite vigorously with it, but makes the most hilariously pathetic sounding cries as she bats it around and tosses it into the air. Anybody else ever see anything like this? Tonya makes a whispery "rarr!-rarr-rrowr" sound at the mouse when she's "killing" it and little Butterscotch and Snowflake both make little low rumbling growls as they play with the mouse (esp Snowflake, who gives the growly OM NOM NOM MRRROWR NOM noises while she works over her mouse)...only Spooky seems to sound as though she's apologizing to the toy mouse for the beating she is laying upon it.

Re: this is new...
Wed, September 2, 2009 - 6:41 PMmy cat does that with hair ties. I have to make sure that none are lying around the house otherwise she starts doing that to them. I've never heard the growling thing before though. How cute!

Thu, September 3, 2009 - 7:32 AMWhen Merlin plays by himself he's got a big range of noises he makes - everything from whispery little "meeps" to growls and pitiful "lost cat" meows. He's really funny to watch and listen to. -

Re: this is new...
Thu, September 3, 2009 - 9:23 AMMy cat does this too! He makes this odd crying sound as he's carrying his mouse around. He'll keep doing it until I go over to him and pet him, telling him what a good "hunter" he is. The first few times he did it, I panicked and ran over to him because I thought he was in pain. Turns out it's just his way of crying for attention. I just wish he didn't decide that the middle of the night is the best time to play this game, though! -

Re: this is new...
Thu, September 3, 2009 - 3:57 PMI hear you! We used to have a cat that would do the same thing. It got so bad, we started going around picking up all her toys before we went to bed. Poor Squeak! Without toys she had to go to bed, too! -

Re: this is new...
Thu, September 3, 2009 - 4:41 PMJust the other day I saw a cat take a mouse or whatever it was she had caught to her wild-raised kitten, and she made those exact sorts of strange cries as she carried it. It must mean something. -

Re: this is new...
Thu, September 3, 2009 - 9:58 PMWe make sure ALL the toys are put away now too. My other kitty likes to drag her stick around and wakes me up trying to bring it up to my bed so I can play with her.. at first it was totally cute but now I make sure it's away at night.

Re: this is new...
Sat, September 5, 2009 - 10:54 PMMy cats used to be working cats, and they had a special croon they would make when bringing home a mouse. Now that they are retired and are full-time indoor cats, I do hear that croon as they carry toys around. -

Re: this is new...
Sat, September 5, 2009 - 11:11 PMYeah, one of my cats plays with paper and carries it all around the place the minute my back is turned. I sometimes hear him making that special throaty closed-mouth meow and when I come to see what he's up to, he's promenading around the house, with an envelope in his mouth. -

Tue, September 8, 2009 - 8:18 AMMy Abby likes to lick envelopes..
She is good for dragging toys into the bedroom while I'm sleeping and giving me that pitiful cry. I've learned to ignore her and call out her name. Eventually she settles down.
