So here is the story: As of just over a month ago, i took in a young unspayed female (who, as it turns out, had just gotten knocked up by the wily neighborhood tomcat) My other two cats, spayed females Tonya and Shadow, have each responded very differently toward her. Spooky (the new cat) is very similar in terms of personality to Tonya, my little drama-queen/diva...as a result, they seem to enjoy antagonizing each other...this weekend, their ongoing game of cat-and--well, also-cat, took on a rather gross turn as each managed to startle the other while pooping, resulting in me having to take the squirt gun to the attacker and give a quick spot wash to the victim's tail, butt and hind legs...thankfully they've only done it once, but, knowing those two, i can easily see it happening again

also, a little follow up...Spooky instinctively knows what the litterbox is for, but does not quite have the method down...

    Examples:

    1. Dug inside the box before getting started, but then sat on the edge of the box facing the wrong way and pooped on the floor
    2. Dug extra deep into one side of a fresh box and then gazed into her newly dug abyss and pooped on the high side of the pile of litter she had just kicked up
    3. neither digs first nor buries when she pees
    4. dug a decent scratch-hole and then faced the wrong way in pounce position and managed to poop on the side of the box

I'm half-tempted to rename her "Wrong-Way Kitty" over this

Awww....sounds like she is quite confused ;-) I am sure she will get it tho'

I would bet that after time goes by, those two will probably become buddies, but with the personality similarities, they are establishing the "queen bitch" ranking, would be my guess ;-)

It could be worse. She could be one of those "toilet-trained" kitties--and still be sticking her butt out in the wrong direction and pooping on the floor in front of the toilet. Imagine getting up to that in the morning! But hang in there--I'm sure she'll get into the swing of it eventually. You might try a bigger litter box, especially if you use the covered kind--she might be claustrophobic, trying to keep at least a little of herself out of the enclosure.

the no-dig no-scratch thing is normal for peeing, lots do it that way -- be sure to put lots of newspaper under and around your litter box until this girl gets better at it. I hope she does!
