we have a tabby cat that will go up to a cardboard box or magazine and rip pieces off and even eats some it. he also likes plastic wrappers from cheese or snack cakes. he is 41/2 has done this most of his life. i dont know what to do to stop this, should i be worried about his health? my other 2 dont do anything like this. could he be doing this because he was taken away from his mom too early?

Re: piglet
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 9:04 AMMy cat likes to tear apart cardboard boxes too. He doesn't seem to eat much of it, though. It's never bothered him. I'm not sure about the plastic bags, though. They may not be as digestible. I'd try to keep him away from them if you can.
Seems like biting cardboard is fairly common. Watch starting at around 2:45...

Mon, June 22, 2009 - 10:05 AMi watched the whole thing and if i were him i wouldn't be worried about being "the man with 3 cats" after the dancing and yodeling.
i try my best to keep those plastic wraps away from him, he will dig them out of the trash-when i catch him w/ one then the chase is on! -

Re: piglet
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 11:23 AMthe plastic, and cellophane, is dangerous, seriously - gotta make sure he can't get at these. Gets wound up in intestines and causes blockages that can kill and can only be surgically removed, which lots of consequences later. Cardboard's OK, I suppose, it's not digestible as it's cellulose --it may have dyes in it but so does a lot of cat food. -

Wed, June 24, 2009 - 1:05 PMi try my best to keep it away from him and have explained to my 6yr old not to leave the plastic straw paper around but from time to time he gets them. wonder why he wants to eat these things. easter straw and tinsel are banned from our home!
piglet is heavier than he looks and we have thought it was from his cardboard habit. -

Wed, June 24, 2009 - 4:22 PMI have one who feels that paper towels are his great enemy. If you don't watch him, he grabs the whole roll, and disembowels them with his back feet. As far as plastic goes, he has a love affair with it. He rubs on it, licks it, etc. But he doesn't eat it.
He did once bite a Chistmas light when it was plugged in. It scared him, but he didn't get hurt from it. -

Thu, June 25, 2009 - 6:30 AMthats kinda funny cuz piglet chewed thru our cell phone charger while plugged in. is your cat declawed? mine are.
my mom also had a tabby who destroyed paper towels and tp. he went to great lengths to get into the closed bathroom got under the sink and ripped up a brand new pkg of tp- not one roll was undamaged. -
