ever build an outdoor cat enclosure?

topic posted Thu, February 21, 2008 - 12:34 AM by  janeO
I saw an add once for a large outdoor cat enclosure
that allowed the cat to go outside at will,
yet was safe from harmful encounters with other animals.
Made out of bird net, high loose walls.

I would appreciate success stories, advice.

We built one out of chicken wire and two by fours. It was about 8' high, 12 feet long, and about 4' wide. We just built it around one of the exterior doors, but that house had three doors leading into the back yard. It had a bunch of perches and I grew windowboxes of grass and edible flowers around the edges.

    The cats loved it.

older or ill cats like to have some sort of roof above them when they're outside - they're wired to fear overhead predators and, if they feel weak, to hide where those can't see them. My older cats will now only go onto the deck if I'm there, as no roof any more. I don't think it takes too much - shadecloth fastened over the top would probably be super. The 8x12 one described here sounds divine - ones my friends have had have been a lot smaller, and built around a window rather than a door, but their cats liked that too - it's a great idea, as long as you don't have roaming digging dogs (or bears!) in the area

oh, forgot to add, if you use typical lightweight bird net you'd better stand by for the first few days because you will have to seriously unstick some cats from it and that's very difficult!! the heavyweight stuff is better, but it's expensive. The smallest holes you can find - they will poke at holes the size of typical horse fencing until they get them big enough to get out of (my fence at home now keeps out everything *but* cats, lol!).

Although pretty pricey, this is the one that interested me:
          From David Curlett

          "Houdini-Proof Cat Fence System

          For Immediate Release:
If you look at any animal welfare or pet care website, they will advise you to keep your cat inside. Many adoption centers and breeders will only sell cats to homes that will keep them inside. The reason is simple; indoor cats live up to five times longer than outdoor cats. However, veterinarians are citing obesity as a growing health concern among cats. Increasingly more and more cat care professionals are letting their cats outside due to a new product from Benner's Purr-fect Fences. The product is a top to bottom virtually invisible cat fence/enclosure system. "We love our fence...our 40+ cats are enjoying every minute of being outside, it gives them a real break from being inside."(Dixie Dixon; Blue Bell, PA)

Until now, it was virtually impossible for cat owners to safely allow their cat outside without having an electric barrier or standard wooden or chain-link fence with a roof type device installed on it to keep cats from climbing out.

The new "Houdini-Proof" Cat Fence System allows cat owners to set up a safe, outdoor enclosure of whatever size they want. Cat owners would be able to fence off anything from a small area to their entire property.
There are several unique aspects to the Purr-fect Fence "Houdini-Proof" Cat Fence System. Made out of a flexible, lightweight, polypropylene mesh grid, the fence is easy to install and doesn't ruin your view. The flexibility is also one of the key factors in making Purr-fect Cat Fences by Benner "Houdini Proof." Cats don't like to walk or climb on unstable surfaces. For this reason, most cats won't even attempt to climb it. For those escape artist cats, however, the mesh fence turns back in at the top to force the cat back to the ground. This system is employed at cat shelters with up to 60 cats. This system has also been used as an enclosure for feral cats. Despite all of this, there has not been a single escape to date.

With feline obesity becoming a growing concern among veterinarians, a Purr-fect Cat Fence allows cat owners to provide their loved one with the exercise they need without having to worry about predators, death or injury by vehicle, feline leukemia, distemper, or FIV. As mentioned earlier, this product is revolutionizing how cat care professionals give advice. Check out www.purrfectfence.com to find out more about this revolutionary new product.

that purrfectfence thing, from what I can see of it (it's quite hard for me to see it in the pictures and they don't show any good diagrams of the overall array), but it does look like something really great -- but expensive!!!! It reminds me of a large aviary, built to allow flying. Only thing I'd mention -- at least at my house, whenever I have netting up for any reason, it gets all kinds of leaves deeply clogged into it, blown by the wind. You could end up with a huge leaf-covered cave in your backyard, lol!

Being a do it yourselfer, I will report back when I do it.
We don't even have a cat yet.
My last one died from licking anti freeze, I believe.
and this is why I want to set it all up right before even bringing in a
              new kitten.

The leaves might be annoying but it will be better than
worrying about dangers lurking out there.
