So I know this sounds kind of insane, but bear with me...
I have two female cats, Tonks (who is spayed) and Molly (who has an appointment to be spayed in about a month). A few weeks ago, a male stray "adopted" use and has decided that he wants to live in our house. He's been staying on the patio, but he keeps trying to come into the house. I just assumed he wasn't neutered, and I've been working on the transition of moving him into the house with the girls.
I don't want kittens, so I am very careful when I bring him inside. However, he wants nothing to do with Molly, even when she was going through her first heat recently. He is not aggressive at all, but he avoids Molly as much as possible. He has no problem with Tonks; in fact, he's very submissive to Tonks, who is the boss of our household. He hasn't shown the first sign of aggression, he doesn't even show his claws when he's playing, and hasn't so much as bared his teeth at any of us. I've had no problem with him spraying, and he is content to just lie in my lap for hours being petted.
So that long explanation leads to this question: Is it possible that he has been neutered, but still shows the appearance of testicles? He has short hair, and his scrotum is clearly visible. I'd like to be able to move him into the house as soon as possible.
Any help would be appreciated! :)

Re: kind of a crazy cat question...
Mon, March 16, 2009 - 8:45 PMYes, a male cat can be neutered and yet still look intact in that way. I would still double check with a vet, though, just to be absolutely sure. One of my boy cats appeared to be intact when we first rescued him, only the vet figured out that he only just looked that way. -

Tue, March 17, 2009 - 12:14 AMAlso, couldn't you take him inside and just keep him in a separate room when you aren't chaparoning him? It's what is recommended for new cats anyways--(usually a small room like the bathroom). -

Re: kind of a crazy cat question...
Tue, March 17, 2009 - 6:41 PMI considered that, but I just didn't think it was fair to him to keep him cooped up so much of the day when he's used to being outside. I can't get him neutered (if he needs it) for another month, so that would be a lot of time spent in the bathroom. It is definitely the best thing to do when introducing new cats, though - I will do that for a day or two when I can get him inside. Thanks for your help!

Re: kind of a crazy cat question...
Tue, March 17, 2009 - 6:44 PMI'm starting to wonder if that's the case. I happened to see another boy cat (I feel weird now that I'm comparing cat testicles :P) today and I think my cat may actually be neutered. It helps to hear from someone else that it could actually happen. Thanks for your help! :)

Re: kind of a crazy cat question...
Sat, March 21, 2009 - 7:55 AMThe vet removes the testicle from the scrotum, leaving the scrotum intact. So it looks like there is still some "man-equipment" back there, but it's empty. If it doesn't look like it has a couple of smaller marbles in it, the cat has probably been neutered. I say "probably" because some cats might have non-descended testes.
You can see images of the parts as they are being removed here (no blood or really gross stuff, just surgical things of interest):
www.lbah.com/feline/felneuter.htm
There are even false testicles created under the name of Neuticles:
www.neuticles.com/index1.html
They have a size chart with images there of the product. For the cats, the sizes are .63" and .75".
And here's a marble page, LOL:

All my male cats still have their empty sacks, with no marbles. -

Re: kind of a crazy cat question...
Sun, March 22, 2009 - 2:56 PMyou can figure out what's going on very easily but you'll have to hold the kitty and gently feel and squeeze his little balls. And try not to feel too weirded-out doing it!!! Because the cat will actually squirm and look at you as if to say, are you a complete pervert, dude??? Just feel them gently -- you'll only have a second to do this -- and see if there are actual peanuts in the shell. If you've never done this before you might have to go find a cat with known intact testicles and feel those for comparative purposes. But usually, in a full-grown male, there's a huge difference between intact and neutered. In a young male, not that much. I hope he is, because I'm excited he'll be able to get a home with you.
