One eats more than the other

I've recently noticed that my younger cat is getting a little pudgy and the older one getting a little thinner. My husband and I always see the black one (the pudgy one), Lucy, eating a lot. The other, Beatrice does eat but we think Lucy is eating a lot more. They share one of those food dispensers and now I want to go back to just putting out separate bowls again. We got the dispenser for when we went out of town and for it to be easier on the cat sitter. Beatrice isn't behaving differently and I know cats hide their pain and sickness more than dogs. Lucy is a year old and is still kind of a baby.

Comments, suggestions, questions?

thanks,
-Liz

My youngest cat, just over a year old is a pig! But he's not overweight. He will eat all the food if I free feed them. So my three cats all have their own bowls and all get fed 3 meals/day so I can guage how much food they are eating.

The funniest thing I ever saw was when I got home from a trip. My cousin was housesitting and she thought we free fed our cats (she got confused by my instructions) so she kept the bowl full the entire weekend. When we got back, Jack, our youngest was laying in the hall all bloated. She had fed them a weeks worth of food in 2 days. Jack didn't move much over the next 3 days.

But how old is the older one? When they get to the age of 10 or so you should really keep track of their weight because weight loss is an early sign of all kinds of things. It might just be bad teeth discouraging them from eating, or it could be all kinds of other things (diabetes, thyroid, kidney failure). I keep a log and try to weigh my old guys every month or so if they seem to be losing weight. If they go down by a pound, and were only 8 pounds to start with, that's a huge weight loss catwise. If they both have equal access to food, I don't think the shared feeder's a problem unless the younger one's literally scarfing it all up.
