I have a 6 month old female cat who isn't spayed yet...we have an appt for her to be next month. My problem is that suddenly my kitty has taken to urinating on odd things like my children's beds and my own bed but she doesn't urinate on clothes that are on top of the dryer nor does she on rugs around the house. Just the beds. Any ideas on why? And any ideas on how to stop this? I love this kitty and I don't want to re-home my baby but the smell of cat urine on my kids' bed irritates and it isn't fair to the kiddos

Hi Mellissa~ It's good that you already have an appointment to get your kitty spayed. 6 months is about the time that young kitties, if they're not spayed or neutered, begin to spray. It's them marking their territory, them coming of age and asserting themselves in the world. She probably sprays those areas because she feels that they especially need to be HERS. They have yours and your childrens scent on them and therefore all the more attractive to her and her sense of smell. This behaviour will most certainly stop when she gets spayed, until then try to keep her away from your beds. It may seem cruel to keep her out of bedrooms, especially if she's used to coming and going as she pleases, but for your sake, just keep her away from them as much as possible until her appointment. She may try again, but it's not something that will continue to happen after she gets spayed. You can clean things like bedding and mattresses with Nature's Miracle - and you may try some sprays to keep her away in the meantime, but it will fix itself after shes fixed. Good luck!

are your kids older, not wearing diapers or still perfecting toilet training? if there is any smell of pee on the bed, that could start her off.

Also ----- and I'm not saying this is necessarily true but I had one cat who did this, only one ----- sometimes if a cat is mad at you about something (usually because they feel slighted, left out of things, or on the bottom of the totem pole), they will pee on your bed. If the cat feels that you and the kids have both been mean to her in some way, or that you now like the kids more than you like her, she might go for both beds. The cat I had went for my roommate's bed, because the roommate and I were feeling a lot of tension but couldn't really do anything about it for the time being due to finances. Cat diagnosed correctly that the roommate was upsetting me and began to pee on his bed as if she were on a mission. We ended up putting plastic over it whenever the room was unattended. She peed on that. She only did this when nobody was around. Luckily we got another place in a couple of months and she never did that or anything remotely like it ever again in her whole life!

Also, I forgot to add this - but another reason she may be taking it out on your stuff is that she may have a bladder infection. It doesn't sound like it, especially given her age, but it's a very serious malady that should not go untreated. The spraying will escalate if she does have one, but you need to keep your eye on her behavior. She will be in pain if this is the case, so if you notice any blood in the urine then get her to a vet asap. Again, it doesn't sound like this is what's happening since shes at the sexual maturity age, but I felt it's important enough to mention and consider. Good luck.

Definitely get her checked out by the vet, a co-worker tells me one of her cats has cysts on her urinary tract and whenever they flare up the cat will pee on things. My own kitten was peeing on the bed a lot and spaying really cut that down but didnt totally extinguish it - weeks will go by just fine then suddenly its twice in one week (and this is after a vet visit, clean box, fresh water and consistent diet). One thing I've had success with for the past month I've used it is the Feliway diffuser - supposedly it secretes a hormone that helps them stop marking. Its pricey, definitely shop around the web for half off the retail store cost, but so far I've found it worth it. I keep one running in the bedroom and (crossing fingers and hoping not to tempt fate here) its working.

    Hello-
I have had a similar experience with my female kitty peeing on my bed. In my case, it was behavioral. Hopefully the surgery will help. For cleaning, DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! I spent so much money on every product under the sun to treat unwashable areas like carpet. JUST USE VINEGAR! It sounds too simple to be true, but it is! If you can't put it in the washing machine, blot up the excess moisture with toilet paper (it's very absorbent) & then soak the area with vinegar. I use a squirt bottle or spray bottle. Put a fan near it & just wait. It will take about a day or so for the vinegar smell to disappear, but when it does, all that horrible cat pee smell is gone! It kills the bacteria in cat urine that causes that offensive smell.
    Good luck!
    Heather
