Just wanted to pass along something that happened so no one else winds up with a real tragedy on their hands.
I just adopted a 5 month old kitten, and got him his first collar and tag this past weekend. I choose an elastic-y one with a safety clasp. Naturally the little guy doesn't like it so has been finding ways to get himself out of it. Now, yesterday he managed to get it up over his chin and between his jaws like a bridle, where it got stuck. He's still tiny so there wasn't enough tension to make the clasp pop open on its own. I wasn't home but my renter was - he heard the gagging and saw him up on his hind legs falling over backwards fighting it so got it off him. We don't think it was choking him, and maybe he'd have gotten out of it on his own, but I'm going to get him another non-stretchy one until he gets bigger. One that doesn't expand.
I'm new at raising cats, so maybe this was common knowledge I missed (although I had a seasoned cat veteran with me when I bought it), but wanted to share this so no one else has to have a similar ordeal.
Happy holidays!

Re: Careful with those collars
Wed, December 24, 2008 - 9:02 AMYeah, one of mine just can't seem to wear a collar for just that reason. Every time I turned around he was either choking on it or had somehow unbuckled & removed it himself. I finally just got him microchipped.

Re: Careful with those collars
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 3:28 PMCollars are such a catch 22. If your cat happens to get snagged, you want one that will break away, but then you lose the whole point of the collar. I also went for the microchipping option.

Re: Careful with those collars
Wed, December 31, 2008 - 9:50 AMThis happened to me in '95...I was away for the weekend and my house/catsitter didn't notice! I got home and he had just been there...but the collar had been stuck in his mouth for some time, obviously, because he was no longer fighting it. He'd gotten it stuck so that his jaw was jammed open. I guess it was hard to see it in his fur, but jeez...his mouth was open...how could one not notice??? His gums were all distended and I'm certain he must've been dehydrated as well. Apart from his still goofy gums, there was no major/lasting damage, but I still shudder with horror when I think of the torture he endured for hours, possibly days. I have never used a collar since then, and my kitties are all indoors except for forays with us.
