Aww Just Neutered My Baby!!! Help

topic posted Sat, February 23, 2008 - 2:56 PM by  Sara
Awww, I just neutered my ball of love Teddy who is 4 1/2 months old. I am so sad to see him running around the house right now with the cone. He is having a lot of trouble jumping and coordinating. He keeps trying to take off his cone. I let him have it off but he keeps trying to lick the area......... Awwww, it's just so sad!

Ok, I am wondering why the cone?

I volunteer in a rescue and we get hundreds of cats/kittens spayed and neutered each year and I have yet to see one be given a cone to wear. They are all fine after all of it.

they gave it to him to prevent licking the wound... My gut reaction was fuck the cone, i'm not going to make him wear it. But I kept seeing him try to lick the wound so I put it back on........thoughts?

I will ask the woman who runs the rescue, tomorrow. I am curious. I mean even the girl kittens don't get cones and their spaying is bigger surgery. I never knew this myself but a google shows many vets do it and people asking about it in forums and getting told by others their cats never came home with cones...

...The feral spay and neuter programs spay and neuter and the cats are back outside without cones...

One of my female cats actually removed one of her own stitches after being neutered. I took her back to the vet and she got restitched and gifted with a cone. She's the only one of my cats that ever got a cone from being neutered.

i just had this crazy visual of a field of feral cats all with cones on. seems like something that belongs in a surreal movie! hehe

We just had our cat spayed at one of the spay clinics, they did not give her a cone.

I bit of licking would be ok, saliva is meant to help the healing process. The cone would be for if the cat just never gave it a rest or started chewing or something.

Maybe the surgery ended up being more involved than the average one.
I have never seen a cone used so who knows your cat might have been anxious or anything during post op.
Just leave it on and ask them questions .

come to think about it its probably because he is 41/2 months old ,that he has the cone -this will slow him down and guarantee you'll keep him indoors -he will still fight for a month because the hormones don't revrese over night and he was beginning to develop the hormones.

I've never seen a cone, ever -- but I have assisted in at least 50 neuterings, and you're supposed to end up with something that is not a wound -- the process is very neat, the couple of stitches kind of retract into the sac, there really wouldn't typically be anything there that they'd go after, and I've never seen them go after it, either. Now if he turned out to be a testicle up in the abdomen (tetraorchid), or if there was only one apparent and they went hunting around in the abdomen for the other (monorchid) -- both of which I've experienced with neuters -- then yes, you'd have a real abdominal incision. But even with that, I've never seen a cone. Maybe it's a new trend or just something this vet likes to do. I truly don't see why you need to leave it on. You can take it off temporarily and observe; if all goes well, just keep it off.
