We seem to have another large pet food recall going on. I found it here: www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/E...ENF01098.html which is a huge page, and you have to scroll down to the end. I CC&Ped the pet food list to my lj here: windsparrow.livejournal.co/174577.html for easier reading.

Sigh, I wasn't going to say anything, but this thread is increasing.
So what exactly should someone do if that is all they can afford for their pet? Let's look at the options.
Are you suggesting that buying such food makes one a bad pet parent and that therefore only people who can afford the most expensive and overpriced quality/quality-controlled food should have pets? -

Sat, March 28, 2009 - 3:31 PM"So what exactly should someone do if that is all they can afford for their pet? Let's look at the options. "
We are all trying to do the best we can for our pets. There is no doubt about that. It would be a shame for any of us pet food snobs to make someone feel bad just because they have not come to same conclusions.
There was a time when I thought all I could afford was Special Kitty or the like, and that when I could squeeze the budget to swing Science Diet, I was really doing something great for my cats. Then one of my cats developed some serious health problems directly related to the quality of the foods that I was feeding him. I learned the hard way that the less I spend on cat food, the more I spend at the vet. And I learned how to choose better quality foods for my cats. So yeah, I am a bit of a pet food snob.
But I also know what it means to have too much month left at the end of the money. Right now, I am blessed to be financially stable, and able to easily afford the kind of spendy, snobby pet food that is not on this recall list, and was not on the previous big one back in '07. Knowing what I know now, given a need to drastically cut my cat food budget, I would choose to make my own cat food rather than feed lower quality commercial food. Sure this option may not be for everyone - it certainly would take a lot of time and energy to do enough research into feline nutrition to feel confident about how healthy a choice it would. But for sure, I encourage everyone to learn how to read ingredients labels so they can make the best choices possible within the resources available to them.
One thing I like to spread the word about, is that there are a couple of factors that make the higher quality foods more affordable than they might seem on first glance. I've already mentioned the potential savings at the veterinary clinic - but that's not really quantifiable, and while the potential there is great, we also know that there are plenty of cats who lived long, healthy lives without eating any particular special food. A second factor that makes the higher quality foods more affordable, is that because they contain fewer fillers, they are more nutritionally dense and more easily digested. So they are more satisfying, and portion sizes can be smaller, which means that a similarly-sized package will last longer. As a special bonus, the more easily digestible, the less waste comes out into the litter box, and I've found it doesn't smell quite as intense - can't put a price on that.

Re: Pet food recall
Tue, March 31, 2009 - 11:15 AMWhat Wind said.
Yes, I can be a pet food "snob" but I dont' really care what other people think. I have lost several pets to food-related problems (from feeding them cheap, grocery store food) and refuse to do that again. So I educated myself and changed my priorities. I will make other cuts to my expenses (and I already have) before feeding my animals cheap food. And I will make their food before ever buying anything at the grocery store. I won't get more animals because I know I can't afford to feed them healthy food.
The long run savings of feeding higher quality food far outweighs the short term upfront "savings" of feeding low quality food, not only with decreased vet bills, but also that the higher quality food goes a lot further. Also, with the lower quality food, how much will you "save" when you end up having to shell out a ton of money to the vet because the food was tainted and now your pet is sick?
Not to mention that there are good quality foods that aren't high priced. Felidae is the first one that comes to mind. It's a premium food but comparably priced with Iams, which is much lower in quality. If you have a Pet Food Express (mentioned above) nearby you can get good food for a good price because they offer it at a discount (buy 3 get the 4th free). I've priced it out and it's actually cheaper there than at the local "discount" pet store.
The key is that people should be educated on what to look for on the ingredients list and pick accordingly. Not doing so has nothing to do with money. -

Re: Pet food recall
Tue, March 31, 2009 - 12:24 PMI had a similar experience, switched to high-quality, no preservatives pet foods after my animals seemed to do fine, then developed cancer in old age. i do feel the health of my pets since making the switch makes sense.
i often don;t have the cash on hand o go for the Pet Food Express 4 for the price of 3, but it all works out. plus i have found that packaged pet foods can get stale or rancid, or attract insects or other pests, if they sit around too ,long.
anyway, not to lecture the sister (i tink itls a sister, but if it;s a brother, same message) who is on a tight budget.
soemtiems there are humane rganizations that cn hlp you out if money is tight for pet food, care, or supplies. -

Re: Pet food recall
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 3:30 AMThank you for your responses.
My husband and I have little money but I get Wellness C.O.R.E. as their daily food with occasional cans of quality moist. I just have known too many people who could best afford "Cat Food." I suspect with the economy and people even giving up their pets or just abandoning them because of it, it's going to get worse--I don't have kids either to compete with my pets for spending on. This doesn't help the shelters either which already have zillions more than can ever be adopted (especially now). Thing is, plenty of people I have known can't afford either Felidae or Iams, for that matter. They have animals they have taken in--free kittens or puppies or strays or their friend's animals that couldn't be kept etc. They love their animals but can't usually afford what we think is healthy food let alone vets. Where would those animals be if they hadn't been taken in? Some people do live in areas where there are orgs that will assist but how many don't.? Most people in this country can't even get health care for themselves and families--people are hungry and homeless and sick. Many homeless have pets as well. So I do think any snobbishness needs to be tempered with that in mind.

Re: Pet food recall
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 9:54 AMThanks for the heads-up.
We recently got a puppy and his latest food is on this list. Great. My cats' food is not on the list, but occassionally they taste test the dog food, so now I'm worried! I had 5 cats die in 3 days last summer when we moved and I can't go through that again. -

Re: Pet food recall
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 12:36 PMthe link goes to a list so huge I don't think I have time to read it all - can you help a bit by giving brand name or something so I can identify it and maybe google it? The link to your journal does not work.
BTW it was unnerving to see all those medical drugs and equipment being recalled, including one drug my cat used to take. -

Re: Pet food recall
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 12:39 PMdo you live inthe bay ARea? are you anywhere near a pet Food Express store? thy have fairly low prices 9exceot on Advantage...if you want to buy it there, ask them to ceck the price at Pet Vet as they guarantee their prices over competitors and will give youthe lower price.)
I like Pet Food Express artly because it has many specialty, healthy brainds of pet food and almost never anything that has been on the recall list in the last 5 eyars or so. they are really conscientious that way (one product from 2003 WSS revalledbut that has not been on the shelves since..GO! dog food from their texas manufacturing place...)
it;s worthlooking.

Re: Pet food recall
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 7:21 AMI know...and I still don't know why they died. I had 7, 2 girls and 5 boys. The girls are fine! I thought they might have gotten into something in the basement of the house we moved into, but they all went down there, so why did just my boys die? I was a mess. Still am, really, when I think about them...Gizzy was 15...he was like my kid...I miss them so much! -

Re: Pet food recall
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 3:19 PMWhat an ordeal that must have been, and not to know what had caused it or if others would get it too. I did get two cats with kidney failure from the big kidney failure crisis food recall a couple of years ago but they lasted over a year each due to not having much of the bad food and catching it early--but this is one of the scariest things that can happen to a pet owner, isn't it??
Thanks for posting the actual list, Wind, I appreciate it. Looks like almost everything on WalMart's pet shelves is on the list. But I already don't buy their brands as my cats spurn them.

Re: Pet food recall
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 3:53 AMWind...Thanks for posting the list here to make it easier to check to see if our brands are on it. I have a very sweet, warm and loving all black, short haired, male named Jig-a-boo ! (no, I'm really NOT prededice) He loves to greet people, he's always by my side (like right now, against my leg as I sit up in bed, writing this !) and when I get ready to go out, he follows me to the door, bating at my ankles, as if say, "Where are you going ? Don't leave me here " ! He even fetches a rolled up ball of tin foil, then brings it back, drops it, wanting me to throw it again ! he will do that 2 or 3 times, then gets distracted or bored. He also travels very well and settles right down and sleeps or watches the world go by....Anyway, I have fed him nothing but Science Diet for his entire life (13 or 14 years) and has never been sick, except for a mild eye drainage problem after a stay at a friends house with other cats present. He is still very perky and active. I buy the large 17-20 lbs. bag, then empty it into 2 large air tight containers. I keep the second one sealed and unopened until I run out of the first container. There usually seems to be a coupon available (2,3 or 5 dollars off) each time I buy it. It's well worth it and his litter box smell is kept to a minimum !
