Hello fellow cat lovers...
My dear sweet "Pretty Polly" passed away on Columbus Day, and I am just now able to write about it. We are heartbroken, and also feeling a bit guilty. We took our kitty "Holstein" to the vet in April and learned that she has a tumor in her sinuses. We spent $2,000 between dental work, a CT scan, and ongoing meds. This was immediately after my hubby lost his job, and people thought we were crazy to spend our every penny on our kitty (especially since we're both unemployed). But I figure you cat lovers probably understand, and many of you would also go to great lengths to help your feline.
So when we then learned that Polly needed to see a cardiologist, right after Holstein's procedures, we didn't have a dime, and figured we'd get her there as soon as we could. Well, she ran out of time before we could do anything. She was having trouble breathing, and we took her to the vet on Columbus Day. She was in critical congestive heart failure and had a heart attack as soon as we got home. There wasn't a thing we could do, although we did pay for a procedure to remove fluid from around her lungs, which obviously wasn't enough of a help. I wish we could've spent that $328 a few months ago, and maybe it would've had more of an effect. *Sigh*
I feel like we favored one child over another, but we did everything we could possibly do. We buried her in the yard that evening. Since we had recently moved to this house, we hadn't yet re-installed our garden pond. So we dug another hole for the pond liner, and now we have Polly's Pond to remind us of her, and make us smile as we remember all her goofy and sweet idiosyncrasies. Now the other kitties like to go out and sit by the pond, and I imagine that they are remembering Polly. I will say, the house sure is quiet without her...she was the squawkiest cat I've ever known! I've been told that this was due to the thyroid condition that she also had, but I prefer to think that it was just her personality. She was also a self-petting cat, if she found our hand sitting idle. She will be missed. Today it is Dia de los Muertos, and we will honor her with our "ofrenda" when the sun goes down.
So I am sure that there are many others out there who are having trouble affording veterinary care. If your kitty takes Methimazole or Lasix, please send me a message privately. I might be able to lend a hand. A small help anyway. :)

Re: Polly, Methimazole, and Lasix
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 3:31 PMI am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your nice kitty Polly! Your offer of pet meds is a wonderful gesture in honor of your little loved one and I'm sure someone will gratefully take you up on it.
You must try not to feel guilty about coming up short financially when Polly got sick--one only has so much money, and you could not have anticipated the specifics of another cat illness following so close on the heels of the first, nor did you really have time to figure out a way to come up with the extra money before Polly had her heart attack. This isn't a situation unique to people with pets these days--many humans are running up against the same kind of tough choices in their own health care. These are rough times, and you made sacrifices for Holstein with the best of intentions, without a crystal ball to warn you about Polly's problem. Cut yourself some slack. I am sure Polly knew and enjoyed your love and affection, and I am sure she is not holding any grudges now. Take comfort in your memories of the happiness she had with you.

Mon, November 2, 2009 - 4:26 PMI'm so sorry for your loss. You really did do the best you could. And Pretty Polly very well knew it. They do - they know when they are loved and cared for. She was a lucky kitty to have you, and the other kitties in your pride.
May Polly's Pond be a blessed and peaceful place for many four-legged and two-legged to enjoy.
May your luck with finding jobs turn around, and you soon find something suitable. -

Re: Polly, Methimazole, and Lasix
Thu, November 12, 2009 - 1:14 PMThank you Briar and Wind! You are both very sweet and kind, and I needed your words (though I felt a bit selfish at receiving comfort!). Polly's Pond is a beautiful thing...it reminds us of her, and provides many wild critters with a place to congregate, drink, and bathe. Polly would have appreciated that!
Shortly before Polly died, we had a Western Spotted Skunk move into our house. (Yes, INSIDE the house...we cannot find where she is getting in!) Two of my kitties have decided that she is just a strange cat, while the other thinks she is something to swat at. So far, she just runs away from him, and she has only sprayed once in the house...it quickly faded. Not bad for over a month in the house! She is so beautiful...small like a ferret, and spotted or marbled. She's very tame and sweet, comes when called, and is hugely entertaining. I guess we are her pet people. We trapped her and hauled her off FOUR TIMES and she always comes back. What to do? Enjoy her, I guess! Polly would have. :)
