I just adopted 2, two year old ferals from ARF. They were brought to ARF when they were 4 months old and have been there ever since...with the exception of one adopter who ended up returning them. They didn't call them feral but, trust me, that is what they are. At any rate, I need to get them to the vet but without being able to pick them up, how do I get them there? Any ideas?
Thanks,
Debbie

Re: Help! 2 year old ferals need to go to the vet.
Sat, July 19, 2008 - 5:55 PMCan you get a live trap? bait it with delicious smelly cat food, and let their stomachs lead them in. -

Sat, July 19, 2008 - 8:12 PMI don't have a live trap, but I wonder if putting the food in the carrier will work. They love the wet food and if I keep them just a little bit hungry I wonder if they will take the bait. I think I will give that a try. Thanks! -

Mon, July 21, 2008 - 12:55 AMYou'd have to make sure that you had a way to shut the trap the instant the furbaby was inside. -

Wed, July 23, 2008 - 12:04 AMYou know there are organizations who can lend you a live trap.. Perhaps the feral cat rescue group in your area or theHumane Society. Also, t call pet stores, hardware stores and the like. Here's an idea of what you might need.

They dont look that spendy.
While the tricking into the carrier might work, at least with a live trap, you can catch them when they decide to go in, and not have to worry about waiting to slam the door shut. Feral cats are cautious and smart, they might take a while to get the gumption up to go and get the food. -

Re: Help! 2 year old ferals need to go to the vet.
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 10:09 PMI have a ferral cat which I've had almost one year now. When he needs to go to the vet I trap him, grab him, hold on tight, (sometimes get scratched but better now) and put him in a cat carrier. He likes being held for about 20-30 seconds as he purrs, but as yet will not come up to me. He was about 8 months old when I rescued him roaming the streets so he is very ferral. Good Luck!
