Cats in your Will?

topic posted Fri, May 16, 2008 - 10:25 AM by  Wicked One
Has anybody put their cats in their will or otherwise arranged for their care after you (as owner/guardian) may pass away? I was actually asked this question in a form to complete for cat adoption. I have not completed a will, but I just assumed that my family or friends would step in if I shuffled off this mortal coil. I realize this is a wee bit morbid, but I'm just curious if I'm being negligent in this aspect compared to most other cat people.

That's a good question. And Lee and I just assumed that the other one would take care of the cats, but there is always the chance that we might die together, and then who knows? Good point. So we'll be changing ours.

We put our canine and feline companions in our will. It was difficult at first to convince the attorney to draft the will that way, but he did. We provide monetary support to a specified family member to take the dogs and cats and provide for them for the remainder of the animals' lives.

I don't have a will -I suppose its a good idea to include pets.

You can most definitely include pets in your will, including leaving specific assets to provide care for them, as well as who gets them, and alternates. I work for Nolo, and we've been having a heck of a time implementing a pets section into our will software, as it IS somewhat of a gray area, so it safest to be overly cautious in wording to make sure there are no ambiguities that would cause someone to contest it.

I haven't, but have reminded family that if for any reason I couldnt keep Hannah, that the shelter i got her from is where i promised to take her back to. Maybe i should write something down like that, so they dont have to try and remember.
