OK, this is so weird, I have a cat who will chase and retrieve a ball, here's the weird part, "Puss" looks just like the cat of the day (on opening page) AND the only ball he will retrieve is the rainbow ball like the one in todays cat's mouth! Who's cat is that?, does he fetch too?, I think I have his twin brother!

my kitty Bobby DOES fetch! :-)
he plays fetch with this toy mouse filled with cat litter that rattles, every time I rattle it he knows it's time to play and he can go for hours, if I'm doing something and HE wants to play he picks up the mouse and drops it next to me and just stands there looking at me, and if I ignore him he starts rubbing up against me and meowing untill I throw the mouse and play with him, he's soooo cute, and sooooo smart :-)
my other 2 cats don't/can't though, I've tried and they just run after it, but they don't bring it back, Bobby brings it back EVERYTIME.

My old kitty, Maya, used to fetch all the time.. But most of the time it was with her favourite ball. It was this spongy ball that was half purple and half yellow. Everytime she saw that thing, she'd go nuts. In the morning when my ex-boyfriend was getting ready for work, I'd still be sleeping and the cat would be running around the place like crazy. She'd always have her ball with her; and what drove me nuts is that she'd drop it into her water dish when she ate, then pick it up, run to the bedroom, jump on me and drop this wet, stinky ball right onto my face. Crazy kitty.

The kitty on the opening page with the rainbow ball is my kitty - Hayley. She doesn't fetch, but does bat the ball around, then pick it up and carry it to the next place that she wants to set it down .. so she can bat it around again. :)

my cat loves those foamy balls- he loses his mind over them. and he just started to leave one in his water bowl, but hopefully it won't find it's way into my bed.
he sort of plays fetch- he'll bat the ball back within a few feet of where i'm standing and stop then stare at me until i pick it up and throw the ball. maybe i'm the one doing the fetching, eh?
i had another cat that for the most part was rather unfriendly, paco. when the other cat in the house died, paco became very attentive and playful. he'd play fetch with me nearly every day for three month, then he slowly went back to his old ways (being an incorrigible, mean loner).

Polly -- the first cat in the gallery -- will fetch crumpled up balls of paper, something I accidentally discovered when she was a kitten. I was throwing a piece of scrap paper away, and she would fish it out of the trash and repeatedly drop it at my feet.

The younger of our two cats simply loves those little mice. She'll toss them in the air with her mouth, then smack them around with a paw. She can keep herself well entertained with those mice. We have to cut the leather tails off, though; she'll bite through the leather within a few seconds, then swallow it. Yuk.

My Sigfried played fetch once, when he was a kitten. His favourite toy was paper wadded up into a ball, and his favourite part of the game was chasing it. Once he'd batted it around a bit and it came to rest, he immediately wanted someone to throw it again. He apparently figured out that we were more likely to do so if he brought us the ball. For a good solid twenty minutes one night, I tossed the ball down the hallway for him, and he brought it back each time. He'd never done it before, and hasn't ever again. Weird, eh?

My calico fetches a little stuffed, purple pony, that used to belong to the another calico. That is the only toy she will play with.

I had a calico that would fetch the lids from 2liter soda bottles. I would toss them down the steps, and she would fling herself after them and bring it back to do over again.

my cat feyer loved to fetch squishy foam balls. she always loved chasing them... one day she figured out i'd throw 'em again if she brought them back to me. =)

later, our second kitty, nine, picked up the behavior and started fetching her fur mice. she doesn't do that so much now that feyer is gone, but she still fetches the cat dancer if you throw it across the room.

my calico will play with a toy mouse, bring it back up to the bed, and sit there waiting for me to throw it so she can chase it and bring it back. I enjoy the expectant look on her face as she sits there, waiting for the mouse to be thrown. cute.

Both of my cats fetch, each with their own unique styles. Our oldest fetches his ball/mouse and trots perkily back to me, drops it at my feet and meows. Our youngest alternates between dropping the fetched item directly on top of me and running to the ball only to forget what he was doing in the first place.

Now if they would only catch frisbees and jump through hoops.

Milo, the red tabby, used to fetch when he was a kitten (aluminium balls), now he drags his cat dancer to my feet and bites them to get my attention.

Mikiko, the calico/tabby, will play fetch with me or with herself-crinkle balls, ping pong balls, aluminum balls, but her favorite is a small fabric ball with a few feather plumes attached.

I used to have a cat that would fetch tinfoil balls. Now I have several that fetch small sticks or twist ties (they love those)...or anything I throw and they can pick up.

I have found that most cats will fetch under the right circumstances, some are just more prone to it than others.

The most important thing is to encourage them with praise and pettings when they do it as they are bringing you a gift and inviting you to play at the same time. Even if it can be annoying when you are trying to sleep. :-)

I see most of the list of favorites mentioned already but no one mentioned milk jug rings.

I have also found that some fetch cats will tend to stash their favorite item in something personal like a boot.

I have a cat who fetched her first bird. It was still alive, so I scared my cat into dropping it. And the bird flew away eventually, after it got over being terrified. After that, Nan never brought me back a live bird.

      check book balancing time?
the cats are eagerly sitting at my feet. watching every move.
no, they dont want to help with the math, they are waiting for each and every receipt to be balled up and thrown. they usually dont bring it back, but they toss them back and forth to each other.

I love to fetch. My favorite ball is a hard yellow one with a few feathers attached. I run after it pick it up by the feathers and bring back to my human and drop it at her feet. I think I may be part dog. Seems that these days if I play too hard I also pant like a dog with my tongue hanging out.

I can't give hannah feathered toys. We went through that already and she defeathered the toy like it was a kill. She looked funny with pink feathers on her face but I ended up taking the toy away.

Kind of...She will chase a ball or toy I throw in her direction then run to her litter box and bury it, ew!
Needless to say we don't play that game too often.

My cat also likes those little different colored mice to fetch. That's the only thing she will fetch. Her favorite is the yellow ones, but she will play with all of them until she tears the heads off, or guts them. Then sometimes I have to through the heads or just the ends with the tails until I can buy new ones.

Both my cats fetch, but are so particular.

One will only play with and fetch his furry mouse. It was a "reject" toy, that didn't have the rattle things in it--the only one in the package. He won't play with the ones that make noise, so I'll never be able to find one just like it again!

The other only fetches the rings from the plastic milk containers. He LOVES those!

            Both of mine do. :)
The youngest started fetching at a few weeks old. She used to play fetch for
up to an hour at a time, foam earplugs, small plastic rings and would bring in twigs from the
garden. Her mum eventually cottoned on and will do two of three fetches if she's in the mood.
Youngest one will sometimes still initiate a fetching session by dropping something at
my feet (or my ear, when I'm in bed) but she seemed to loose the intense focus she
had on the game after spaying.

here they are in earlier days!

            www.youtube.com/watch

they both now 'sit' and catch biscuits on their 'forearms' then eat them off them - terribly
cute, but I haven't managed to film it properly yet - hard to aim and film at same time!
