I posted this ad on Craig's List yesterday for an outside dog house for the street babies:
Wanted: Outside Dog House
"Looking for a dog house that would be suitable to around a Lab or Golden size dog. It would be for the four street city cats we have in our back yard that we take care of for the yuck winter months ahead. Willing to pay a reasonable fee, but would prefer to have one donated from the kindness of you heart if anyone would like to as these were stray street cats that we started feeding, fixing and vaccinating and, of course fell in love with."
Then today I go on CL and see this post, this is what has me so pissed:
Regarding Outside Dog House:
"If YOU fell in LOVE with these cats, you WOULDN"T want them outside all year long, ESPECIALLY in the Winter months !!!! Yes, they are animals, and alot of people think that OH yes, they are FINE!! DO you really think they are HAPPY? And what is the point in you even having them,? What kind of enjoyment are you getting out of having those poor cats out in your yard? Give them GOOD HOMES!!!!!"
Well, I immediately sent an email reply back, as any of you know that have been to our place, these cats are very well taken care of and are very happy for outside street cats, oh the nerve of some uneducated people. Ugh!!!
Here is my email to this asshole:
"First off, what are YOU doing for the feral outside street/stray cats in your area? How many do you have in your home and how many are you feeding, getting fixed and vaccinated outside? I have two house cats in our one bedroom apt. that are our "kids". That is all I am allowed in my apt. with renting and I will NEVER be an animal hoarder either. That is never fair to any animal. However, our landlord is fine with us taking care of these street cats and them living quite happily in our yard and if we move we will be trapping these cats and taking them to a new place if that would happen.
I have gotten numerous barn cats and street cats fixed, vaccinated and have placed the friendly ones in good homes or have homed them with myself over the years.
These cats are VERY happy outside, they were feral when I started feeding them and over time they have become semi-feral. I still can not pet any of the four of them, but they do not run from me any more and wait and "talk" to me and two will sniff my finger when I feed them their wet food every evening but that is it and just an FYI they have access to dry food and fresh water 24/7.
I am a huge advocate of TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) in case you are unaware of what that means.
I have given these cats a safe, happy and healthy home be it outside, if you were to see them you would see this for yourself. They play, clean each other, sleep soundly in the grass on warm and sunny days and are quite content. If my boyfriend and I hadn't started feeding them they would more than likely be scrounging for food and be skinny and diseased because no one else would have begun feeding and caring about them. With the care we have been and are giving them, they are all of a good and healthy weight and disease free.
Who are you to judge me and tell me I do not care about these animals? You just sound like an uneducated individual on the care of feral cats.
Please go to www.alleycat.org to learn more about feral cats and their caretakers.
Again, please tell me what you are doing for the all the homeless, starving and helpless cats in your area.
And, just this past Labor Day, I had two kittens about 5 weeks old (way too young to be taken from mommy yet) dumped on me that the neighbors tried to say they found these "wild, feral street kittens" when it was quite obvious they were raised in a house and someone was just too lazy to get mommy fixed or find good homes for these babies on a Sunday and you know what? I had found them both a great home by the next afternoon that Monday, so don't give me your spiel about giving these cats good homes. Again, you are very wrong about me.
I really do not appreciate your post at all when I am doing the best I can for these cats and with them living outside.
You are a fool! I am a very caring, loving and responsible pet owner, so do NOT judge me.
Sincerely,
Melody"
I am just floored by this, everyone KNOWS I am a "crazy cat lady" and take such good care of our fur babies....but on the positive I had several emails for free dog houses and one even just said "I don't have a dog house for you but thank you for doing this and taking care of these cats, may God continue to bless you"!

Re: Need To VENT!!!
Wed, October 28, 2009 - 10:15 PMI hope that asshole burns with shame on reading your reply. Really, people should get all the facts before they jump all over somebody. Who the hell HASN'T heard of TNR? -

Re: Need To VENT!!!
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 4:47 AMSo sorry to hear that thoughtless poster upset you. At least now hopefully they're a lot more
educated about feral cats...and no doubt several others got to see some good
information so there's a good chance other cats will be helped in the future.
Thank you for caring for those little ones, sounds like you're giving them
the best of both worlds. Feral cats can *sometimes* make the transition
to sharing our homes (as I write this one ex-feral kitten, now 2yr old, is curled up
asleep on my legs, and her mum is sunning herself on a sofa by the open
door...) but for the vast majority shelter, food and keeping an eye on their
health is far more appropriate.
Let's hope others reading the responses were
inspired to do the same. -

Re: Need To VENT!!!
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 8:50 AMWell, just an update, got my dog house all set up last evening and let me tell you, they LOVE it, didn't take them any time at all to get in it, stretch out and relax ;-)
Anjuli, one of my house cats was a feral boy too at one time, was a barn cat I tamed, got caught up in fence or something, had to have two toes removed, came home with me to recoup and I had to have my old man put to sleep while Buster was there and needless to say, he never went back to the barn, which just meant he was supposed to be my next house brat anyways and he is such a needy little lover boy now, you'd never know he was such a mean spitfire back in those taming days ;-) -

Re: Need To VENT!!!
Sat, October 31, 2009 - 12:16 PMGood to hear they're happy with their new pad!
Funny how cats, even feral ones, seem to find us just at the right
time. I was only *supposed* to be fostering whilst grieving my
first feline companion.
Phoebe was still in the hiss-and-hide stage when I decided
to offer her a permanent home (her kitten had me nailed from
first sight...) and winning each other's trust was a long process
- involving lots of sitting still, chicken and reiki - but she seems
to regard me as mum now. Loves having fuss,
tummy rubs, sleeps on me at night and on my lap or next to
me in the evenings. I just melt when I see her and her grown
up kitten groom and snuggle. They squabble too of course,
but she will run to her youngsters aid if she crys or gets
jumped on by a local cat.
Love the term 'house brat' term btw, definitely applies
to my youngest feline friend! -

Re: Need To VENT!!!
Sun, November 1, 2009 - 12:27 PMOne thing I learned about outside shelters, unless it's inside a nice, safe fenced yard, little kittens will use it awhile but cats always need 2 doors -- they need a way out in case some dog or raccoon comes thru the front door. So I've always had a side door sawed into them, whether plastic or wood. And it helps to put some kind of covering over both of the doors, like heavyweight plastic, two panels that overlap just a bit, to keep the rain and wind out but they can still see enough thru it to see if the coast is clear. If there's only one way in, the older cat, having become wise to the ways of the world, won't stay in there.
I agree that food, basic medical care, spay/neuter, all of these are essential for keeping feral or homeless cats but dry warm shelter isn't always possible to provide, and if you can do that for them, bravo!

Re: Need To VENT!!!
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 9:16 AMSpeaking as a fellow feral-cat "mom", I couldn't have sent a better response. It's amazing the amount of ignorance out there regarding these amazing animals. Keep up the good work! -

Re: Need To VENT!!!
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 9:23 AMI know, isn't it? Blows my mind, the ignorance sometimes, but at least there are us that are in the know and have brains ;-)
Actually next saturday I am attending a TNR workshop locally and I am super excited about this, it is thru PAWS and they are having two speakers there, I am anxiouos to learn some more tips and meet more fellow feral stray caretakers too. And, Beth you keep up the good work too ;-)
