Temporarily traumatised cat

topic posted Fri, February 8, 2008 - 10:00 AM by  bicycle
I have two cats and I happend to see these beautiful cat collars while at the dollar store and decided to buy just one at first to see how well they are made because in the past I have had some troubles with them. This one is made well and staying on. The sad part is, my cat is hiding and won't come out because there is a bell on it . When he runs the other cat chases him. I hope to find him and so I can remove the bell.

Oh no! Hopefully, you find your kitty. Make sure that any collar you put on your cats have a safety thing so that it will come off if they get caught on something.

I didn't know about the saftey thing -I got it off Buttons but now I have it on Rey . Rey can get around quietly the other would panic and make more nosie by running and running very quickly -there is a little peice that has a stretchy piece is tat the saftey thing? I guess neither will wear it until I find out.

Cats need to wear collars with "breakaway buckles" so that the collar will release if they get snagged and avoid hanging/choking a cat.

It doesn't have one and if I buy one they will take it off -I will get them a harness to walk them instead.
They won't be wearing the harness out of my sight.

The stretchy part is also a safety thing. If it can stretch enough to fit over their head, I think it should be okay.

I personally have never heard of a cat actually entangled on collar on it's own. Has anyone else?

Look at all the bells THIS cat has to wear to prevent him from catching birds:

I had a cat get caught on on her collar once, it wasn't put on her tightly enough and she ended up getting her mouth caught in it. Oh MY GOD. What a horrible experience that was trying to remove it.

I still have a scar from her.
But we did get it off her and she made her views known on the subject by going to the bathroom in my bed.

I've had several cats get tangled in their collars, even with the stretchy bits - getting it hooked over their teeth and their jaws jammed open, which I'm sure is painful 'cuz no way can they relax and just breathe while something so strange is happening to them - and a cat get hung, literally, on a fence by his collar - I don't put collars on them any more because of the anxiety that this will happen again.

yeah cats can get strangled on their collars pretty easily so they now have these onces called Beastie Bands which are made of a sponge type of material which stretches plus the whole thing is held together by velcro. When I adopted Trinity and Neo they had these on from their former owner and they looked good but I couldn't keep them on the kitties, they would eventually end up losing them somewhere so I quit using them and got the kitties microchipped. Now that I have lost Trinity (gone a month now :-() I kinda wish I had kept the collar on tho. Another problem was they both love to drink from the faucet in the sink which I turn on for them and this was making the collars wet.
