We fell in love with a calico kitten at the pound Sunday. Of course we had to adopt her. According to pound policy, she had to be fixed before we could take her home. She was spayed on Tuesday afternoon, and we welcomed her home that evening. She was pretty nervous to say the least...pound, vet, surgery, new home, etc. She rested all of Tues. evening and most of Wed. My concern is she hasn't eaten since she's been here. We've tried dry food, wet food, milk...she did eat a little cheese a few minutes ago. She finally drank quite a bit of water last night. There are two other kitties in the house, and one has been sniffing and hissing at her under the door of the room we've been keeping her in. I think she may be nervous about her new home, but I really wish she'd eat. She purrs quite a bit and she's fairly active now...we're letting her explore the house a little bit. Any ideas or suggestions?

Re: New kitty won't eat
Thu, January 1, 2009 - 9:22 AMfind out what kind of food they used at the animal shelter. she might be a
conservative eater" like a lot of cats, funny about accepting unfamilar tastes. you can mix the food shels been eating a little at a time with the food you;d rather have her on if you want to switch to something healthier or whatever.
also, vets sometimes ahve a prescription food that smells strongly and thus entices cats to eat. be patient; it;s not likely a cat wills tarve herself to death and kittens don;t need that much food. (pus she;s recovering from surgery.)
good luck! -

Re: New kitty won't eat
Thu, January 1, 2009 - 11:56 AMOften cats that are scared won't eat...
she has been through a lot, spaying and now a new home and strange, hostile cats who resent her intruding on their territory all in a couple days. She likely didn't eat for several hours before her surgery, it would be nice if you could find out from the shelter if she ate anything upon waking from the anesthesia. Please check (you may have gotten details from the shelter) that she is having no ill effects from the surgery and that her sutures are in place etc.
It is normal for her not to want to eat at the moment under her emotional condition--just make sure it's not something else (the surgery or an illness). Most important is to keep her hydrated--especially after her having been spayed. That she is drinking water on her own is a good sign. Find ways to minimize strange noises and the other cats trying to get at her through the door.

Re: New kitty won't eat
Thu, January 1, 2009 - 2:17 PMHopefully she will be fine but she should be eating by now if she has a way to eat privately and feels sure about that. I suppose you are feeding her in that private room of hers? The pound and shelter here both give you a supply of the food the cat's been eating when you adopt -- even though they might not like it, it's good digestively to mix it in to any new food and gradually eliminate it. there's good advice above, but I really would keep a very close eye on her due to the recent surgery. Observe her tummy for redness around the incision, try to see if she has any fever, and call the pound if you find either. How's her peeing and pooping??? She should have her own private litterbox in that room too. Anesthesia can cause problems that develop in the days following surgery, and there can be other post-op complications too. This is the equivalent of a hysterectomy, and if you weren't eating after a hysterectomy, and not pooping, the doctor would want to see you pronto. Also, you should actually measure how much water she's drinking -- if she stands at the bowl and drinks for more than about 20 seconds, that's unusual for a cat and can indicate kidney problems, very common after anesthesia--in fact anesthesia is one of the primary causes of acute kidney failure in a cat. Cats with early kidney failure will still eat very enticing treats (like cheese) but they'll only eat them once or twice, and they start refusing all normal food. The pound will handle it if she needs to go back to vet so take advantage of that! -

Re: New kitty won't eat
Sat, January 3, 2009 - 10:41 AMShe's been doing much better. In fact, she started eating soon after I posted this topic. After she actually met the other two kitties, she seemed to feel relieved...almost like, "Ah, okay, I know what to expect in my new home..now I can eat." She's playing and having a good time with one of our other cats. But her incision looks swollen and red....not quite right. We called the vet and we're taking her in now. Thanks for the info...this is still new to me, even after having two other cats. -

Re: New kitty won't eat
Sat, January 3, 2009 - 7:45 PMPixie Tuesday, our darling kitten, pulled one of her stitches out. So the vet put in absorbable this time, but Pixie had to stay over night because the doctor couldn't get to her until after office hours. Poor little thing. I miss her terribly. We can't pick her up till tomorrow late afternoon. I just hate it cause she had to be anesthesized again, which is no walk in the park. And she was just starting to adjust to her new home. But I'm glad we took her in...she obviously needed to see the vet. -

Re: New kitty won't eat
Tue, January 13, 2009 - 3:16 AMWell, that's good news - that it was as simple as a pulled out stitch. Thanks for the update. I hope she will continue easily in readjusting to your home, and have many happy, healthy years with you.
